Some months ago I was invited to speak at an investors’ conference in Mayfair. Several familiar faces were there but I was interested in listening to a new one, so I arrived extra-early to hear her talk. It was not about technical analysis, so perhaps I shouldn’t be writing about it for this blog, but I think STA members might find it useful.
A psychology graduate from Reading University, with a Diploma in Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy from the Royal Berkshire College of Clinical Hypnosis, she describes herself on social media as ‘mindset coach for traders and investors’. She’s been working with them since 2010 using a variety of techniques to help them cope with and overcome the challenges they face.
A slim book divided into three sections she first introduces the reader to her main tools: hypnotherapy, neuro-linguistic programming, and Havening. I particularly liked the sound of the last one, a relatively new psychosensory technique that can be used to cope with stress, anxiety and getting over psychological blockages. Its applications might go far and wide.
The second section of the book focuses on key trading challenges: coping with losing trades, stress and anxiety, negative self-talk and fear. She gives detailed practical examples, like creating an emotional barrier and breathing to calm one’s mind.
The final section covers self-help techniques more generally, like using visualisation, writing affirmations, building confidence and motivation, and discipline, of course. For each topic she details a point by point, step by step method to get you where you want to be.
But the best bit was her taped exercise to help you self-hypnotise. Catherine has a lovely soothing voice which she uses to good effect. She draws you into creating your own safe space with images, breathing techniques, eye fixation and most importantly, methods to come out of hypnosis!
For those who want to learn more I will be donating her book and accompanying MP3 discs, to the STA library at the Barbican so it should be available to borrow by the end of the year. Or you can purchase it in ebook format via
