Yesterday I was lucky enough to be interviewed on IG TV for their Charting the Markets show (which you can view in the blog section [top right] of the STA’s homepage www.sta-uk.org. ). Before and after we went on air I had the chance to catch up with TV presenter and producer Victoria Scholar, who’s now a member of our society, and who had been revising for her STA Diploma exam in October 2019.
So I was rather surprised to hear that, despite her obvious interest and enthusiasm for technical analysis, she had never been to one of our monthly meetings. Outlining them briefly to her, I wondered how many other people might benefit from knowing a little bit about what they were embarking on before they showed up. Sometimes the unknown can be so daunting, can’t it?
Since January we have been meeting, usually on the second Tuesday of the month, at the swanky new venue belonging to the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Tucked behind Moorgate and London Wall (EC2R 7EF) in The City of London, it’s a beautiful Victorian building with first class conference and banqueting facilities.
Meetings kick off promptly at 18:30, usually in the very modern auditorium but sometimes in the frescoed and chandeliered big hall. Speakers, invited for their expertise in technical analysis, trading and behavioural finance, are asked for an hour-long presentation – allowing time for questions. Our roster of top-notch invitees can be viewed and reviewed in the videos of the talks available to members. So, if you missed a point, or couldn’t make it, you can catch up (again, via our home page).
After this, drinks and snacks are served in an informal atmosphere, giving participants plenty of opportunities for networking. A friendly and collegiate bunch, discussions about business news and market trends are sometimes front, centre and lively. Then we’re all packed off home at 20.30.
Our next meeting is Tuesday 14th May and the speaker is Kevin Bull, a technical analyst specialising in foreign exchange who has his own trading company. I’m hoping Victoria will be there, but I must warn you that she’s on the lookout for new guests to interview on her charting show.
